Genealogical Correspondence

6/14/99

NOTE: As I'm just starting I may not know what's important and what's not so I've decided to post all the correspondence (mostly email) that I've received as a result of posting this family tree stuff. Organized alphabetically by family name, most recent first.

BENDURE

My John Bendure (censes says "born in OH.) was born about 1820 and died 1895 in Oh.Bendures have been very hard to research. It seems they had some "Hatfields and McCoys" that don't want to recognize other side of the family.:-) Have never found who Johns father was but do have Johns children. He did have a James but this James married an Indian woman and moved west. There was a book written about 10 or more years ago by several woman. They tried to research all the Bendures they could find and connect them to the right families. My John was considered an "orphan". :-) They couldn't connect him to any previous Bendures either. Actually it's a pretty good book, very large and never commercially printed.I was lucky when I came across someone in IN. that let me borrow it several years ago.I can't remember if your particular family was mentioned.I don't remember seeing any Bendures in N.Y. mentioned. If you type in Bendure in any of the genealogy search engines you will find very little. Even from the Mormons. Are you actively researching your Bendures? If you ever come across any info let me know.

Thanks, Sandi Page, Akron, OH.

My Bendures starting with "John" settled in Harrison and Guernsey Co.,OH.from probably Pa.,and before that is anyones guess.

BUCKLEY

Jim,

Just a point, ANCOATS Manchester was an area which had a HUGH influx of Irish in the last century. I am aware of the large number of Irish BUCKLEY`s but as yet we have done no research on it.

My personal view is the Irish BUCKLEY`s originated from England but I have heard other stories and I am by no means certain. One point, which I had pointed out to me some time ago. The Armourial Bearings or family Coat of Arms granted to BUCKLEY families in the past is almost the same in Ireland as it is in England!

Anyway there is no evidence yet that your BUCKLEY`s have Irish origins. We can of course test this further if we can find them in 1851,1861 or 1871 Census returns. The certificates may help us to do this.

Jim,

>Thanks for looking. Here's what I know and it's uncertain:..........

Well,I have made a start! I found them in the 1881 Census (presume you had not done this?)
These are the details:
1881 Census of Manchester RG11/3984/Folio 089 Born
William J Buckley Head Mar 29 Iron Turner Manchester Lancs
Margaret ~ Wife Mar 27 Rochdale ~
John J ~ Son 3 Manchester ~
Elizabeth ~ Dau 18months ~ ~
John ~ Bro Unm 24 Book Keeper ~ ~
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
This gives me a little difficulty in so far that it means William J was born after the 1851 Census, which I also have on database. Picking out the right JOHN without any aother info other than is age is rather difficult.

However,if you want to proceed I would suggest you go for the marriage cert of William J or go for his birth cert circa 1852. For the marriage it looks to me that there are three possibilities:
1. In Manchester 1872 third quarter
2. In Prestwich 1876 fourth quarter
3. In Prestwich 1877 second quarter

This would mean applying to Manchester Register Office and stating that he only want the cert if William J married Margaret Gibson or Gillen. I think it will be one of those three which I have copied from the Index,no other info is given.
The birth cert looks to be a liitle more difficult. There is only one William James in the index which is a possibility and this shows registration in Ashton Under Lyne not Manchester but it would be worth a try. This is in the third quarter of 1852.
Again the application would need to stipulate that his fathers name was JOHN. If it`s the wrong one you get your money back (£6.50 + post)

I`m afraid this is all I can suggest at this stage. My Parish Register data is mostly pre 1837.

I dont have the full address for the 1881 Census info above because we did not copy complete address info to our database but that can be easily rectified.

I`m intrigued by the prospect of a Castle in the family !!!

regards

Colin

PS The ANCOATS district of Manchester is about 4/5 miles from where I live.

Jim,

Looked at your details:

There are only two RICHARD`s on our database born/christened 1797. One is in Oldham where I live, the other is in Shrewsbury Shropshire. John is far more difficult to deal with, there are so many of them. Do you have any other small pieces of info that may help ?

Colin

Hi Colin,

Thanks for looking. Here's what I know and it's uncertain:

William James Buckley (1847 - 1918) married to Margaret Gibson (or Gillen?)

This from my father:

"My father, being out of work because of the cut-off thumb tip, emigrated to Canada in 1911. His full name was John James Buckley, born Aug. 24, 1877, at 125 Cobden Street, Ancoak, Manchester, county of Lancaster. Father William James Buckley, Mother Margaret Buckley nee Gibson."

"My mother told me that Jack (my father) used to visit his grandparents [John Buckley] who lived in a castle in Northern England."

[But that doesn't figure with the dates if John died in 1858 before Jack was born. Maybe Jack visited his father, William in the castle - Jim]

"I never knew Grandfather Buckley [William James Buckley], as he died of beri-beri.

[Again, this doesn't jibe. William died in 1918 when my father would have been 9. Maybe it was John who died of beri beri. Looks as if he had a short life and died when he was only 36 years old - Jim]

He was a machinery salesman for Armstrong & Whitworth Co. He got beri beri in Para (now Belem) Brazil. My Dad told me his father always carried a gun on these trips to South America. When transporting his luggage, he always required the porters to carry his merchandise ahead of him so they wouldn't run away with his goods. Beri beri can be cured easily with vitamin C. The Englishmen found out the hard way. They found that taking lime juice would prevent beri beri so that is why they are called Limeys. Traveling to Brazil in those days took about three months by sailing vessel. Evidently the ships stopped at New York, New Orleans, etc."

John Buckley (1822 - 1858) - no information except maybe he "lived in a castle in Northern England" or maybe he worked for the Armstrong & Whitworth Co. and died of beri beri - above.

Richard Buckley (1797 - ?) - even less information

Any information you uncover will be appreciated.

Best,

Jim Buckley

Hi Jim,

My mother always told me we had relatives in Canada, however she never said who they were. Right now, I see no connection, having checked the information I have, however I will keep your information on hand just in case. My John Buckley was born in 1864, birkenhead, Cheshire, England and came to Pennsylvania in 1867. He married Jennie ( ) from Tennessee. Good luck in your search!!

Thanks,

Joanna
