Yes I do build Rumfords. I specialize in them and have constructed Rumford fireplaces in fine homes throughout New England. I've enclosed photos of two distinctly different Rumfords that I've constructed during the last few years. The brick surround was built in St' Paul's Episcopal Church rectory on Nantucket Island. And the stone fireplace (constructed with granite from a quarry in Chester VT. and finished with "Black Diamond " granite imported from South Africa for the mantel and hearth stones) was constructed in Jackson New Hampshire. Both are pretty much standard Rumfords 15 inches deep and 4' by 4', although the rectory Rumford is a little smaller. I also build traditional Rumfords with cut jams at 45 degrees and of course have photos. And I have built Rumfords using the kits. And on 6/2/08: Jim, The precast throats and smoke chambers by Superior Clay are excellent products that turn a long and laborious process into a speedy and profit maximizing step.
