Rumford Gasketed Cast Iron Damper

Once the firebox is built using firebrick, place the damper handle bracket on top of the firebox and center it with the back wall of the firebox. Set the Rumford throat in a bed of refractory mortar on top of the firebox and then set the damper. Be certain that the damper is centered over the throat opening of the Rumford throat so it does not restrict the smoke and combustion gases from the fireplace.
Then, attach the damper handle lug to the valve plate of the cast iron damper. Be certain that the lug points to the back of the fireplace so that the handle hangs from the backside of the damper. Next, slide the damper handle through the slot provided in the damper handle bracket and use the pin provided to attach the handle to the lug. Open and close the damper several times to ensure that proper installation has been achieved.

After you have checked the operation of the damper, set the smoke chamber in a bed of refractory mortar. Immediately, check the operation of the damper again to ensure the damper opens within the smoke chamber without restriction. If there are no problems with the operation of the damper assembly, continue with the construction of your chimney system.
